DVD Decrypter is latest. CRCs are not to do with copy protection. jmet has given you what a CRC is. Read it again.

There's a officicial Shrink forum discussion about cylic redundancy here and it talks not only about dirty discs but bad authoring and mentions a couple of titles. My personal experience in a VERY brief time here is that it seems to be more than that. Personally, when I changed burners, I never had the error again. I always got it when I tried to back up a back up. The originals were burned on an inferior burner and that's when I got the error. Either way, it seems to point that for whatever reason, Shrink can't read the data.

According to this you have the current, up-to-date version of Decrypter.

            cyclid redundancy and others

I am having similar issues when I use DVD Shrink. I Have the Sony DVD RW DW-U12A, Firmware version 2.0c. THe error I got recently reads:

DVD Shrink encounters an error and cannot continue.

            Failed to read file "F:\"

            Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I cleaned the disk and it still does the same thing. A friend of mine rarely has this issue, if ever, and he was able to copy this particular disc (House of the Flying Daggers) and others, with no problem.

I saw something about updating the firmware. 2.0e is the most recent one for the Sony I have, and I did download this ( from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1518 ) I have not done the revision yet thogh, because I'm not sure what needs to be done. Does the download come with detailed instructions? If not, how does one go about this? Is this the same as flashing? PLease advise.

Sorry to ask so much, but I have had a lot of problems with copying. It seems to be the drive itself, since my friend has little to no issues. I'll post the other errors I get as they happen. Thanks.

As long as you're sure you have the correct firmware for the correct drive, it should just be an executable. It will probably prompt you to confirm drive name and ask 'are you sure', and away you go. You should get a confirmation that it completed the flash successfully.

So this is considered flashing? What would be the purpose or benefit of doing this to the drive? What are the adverse affects?

I'll let some of the experts here give you the specifics, but in my case, I was able to turn a single layer to a dual layer by cross 'flashing' a rebadged LiteOn. See that discussion here.
From what I've read in other posts, most of the super users and moderators here always recommend keeping your firmware current to avoid burning issues with newer DVDs. But again, I'll let the experts offer more detailed info.

Rip "House of flying daggers" first with DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 and then process with DVD Shrink.

jmet, are you suggesting that cyclical redundancy errors can be overcome by DVD Decrypter? If so, then your're implying that these errors don't alway point to a dirty/scratched disk.

                              To Alien Bay

Legitimate CRC errors ARE the result of either dirt or physical damage.

It appears that the "ARccOS" copy protection method (bad sectors), which DVD Decrypter can overcome, brings rise to FORCED CRC errors...
