    DVD Life

I read that DVD life is supposed to be around 100 years but then I 've heard about DVD failure after only 1-2 months. I'm 6 months into the game of recording DVD's and backing up my original DVD's. I'm wondering, how long will they last?

Has anyone had a dvd fail in a short period or whenever after it was made and had a good scan? I mean failure for no obvious reason (scratches etc.) other than now it won't play correctly and the scan is now terrible. I put my daughters videos of my grandson on DVD ( a set for her and for me) and told my daughter to reuse the VHS-C tapes over again. Hopefully I did not make a mistake.

At the present I am using quality media, burning at 4x, keeping them in slim jewel cases or paper envelopes with a window and flap, storing them vertically in a dark cool place and even have a bag of dessicant in there for an extra added measure. I just stopped writing on them with a sharpie outta fear in time in might ruin them.

If you've had any media go south on you, please list the brand, media code and any circumstances that you think led to the early failure of the DVD (label on it, written on with sharpie etc.) and how it was stored.

    Thanks

Your method is absolutely fine (maybe even a little too cautious).

I have backups burnt 3 years ago that play fine to this day. Just keep doing what your doing and you will be fine. (I have labeled all mine with a Sharpie marker.)

@jmet - THANKS! I'll probaly break out the sharpies again The yellow stickies on the jewel case were ok if I only had 1 dvd outta the case/evenlope at a time when the DVD wasn't marked. I seen that Sharpie had a marker that I wasn't using but then it stated it was quick drying so it wouldn't smear. I never had the smear problem with the regular ones are they ok?

      Thanks

None of mine have smeared. Just don't go wiping your face with them right after you label them. lol

This is how I do it:

        I burn them.

Watch them for quality issues etc.

After watching them I take them out, label them with a Sharpie marker and put them in their case.

I only usta lick 'em to see if it was a good burn but around the sharpie ink when I used 'em to mark the DVD
Of coure kiddin', I run Krobe or Nero on 'em to test the quality of the burn, watch 'em and now hope they keep. I found my sharpies I'm off to markin'

          Thanks again!
