    Liteon External Writer Hangs Explorer

    Help!

I recently bought a "Liteon Sohw 1653s" external dvd writer.

Windows & device manager etc recognises that the writer is there. I have nero express as the default burning program.

Problems occur when i attempt to burn a disk. I arrange my project etc, but when i put a disk in the DVD Writer, the system hangs, and the disk won't even start to write. When i press ctrl & alt & del, it seems that "Explorer" is hanging/crashing.

No matter what type of disk i put in the DVD writer drive at anytime, it hangs/crashes "Explorer".

I use Win 98 SE, 256 Mb Ram, Amd Athlon processor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you perform ANY functions (read a commercial or burned DVD or CD, burn a CD, etc.) from this external drive?

No.....the system just seems to crash/hang, then i have to re-boot. Even a n audio CD causes a crash in the DVD Writer drive

How is it connected? USB, firewire etc.

USB Hub? If you have one, it would probably have to powered as it would drain the power from a bus powered hub.

Have you got another port to try.

First try updating your firmware, download the latest official firmware from Liteon for your 1653SX (DR16CS0K is the latest) here: http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/...e_dvd%20rw.asp

and ensure you have the latest drivers, again obtainable from Liteon here: http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/.../e_drivers.asp
(V605 is the one you need)

Also try (if you have one) a different USB2.0 lead.
Just checking....You do have a USB2.0 PCI card installed dont you?

Good point. I wouldn't try a DVD drive on a USB 1.1 socket. A CD drive would be fine but not DVD.

              I have USB 2.0, folks.

I haven't tried the firmware & driver upgrade yet, but will try that tonight.

I notice that you are running Win98, which does not natively support USB v. 2.0. Have you successfully used ANY USB 2.0 hardware with this system?

Per Microsoft, "If you have a computer running Windows 98, you can get USB 2.0 drivers from third-party vendors like Adaptec, NEC, and Orange Micro. The vendors all sell USB 2.0 controllers, including drivers, which are compatible with Windows 98."

All the USB 2.0 equipment I have comes with their own drivers for anyone with win98.

Here is the link to adaptec's USB page if it is needed.

Ok folks....i've already got the latest driver for the device. I updated the firmware too. I still seem to be having the same problem: any disk i put into the DVD writer drive hangs/crashes explorer.

I'm beginning to think i mifgt need Windows XP as an OS....is this a possible remedy?
