    Hardware Woes

Hey guys, I posted this in the Hardware Section, but that area doesn't seem to get a lot of traffic, so I'm gonna post it here as well, because I really need some help!

Okay, just when I had everything figured out my computer went nuts and I replaced a lot of parts...including the motherboard and the DVD Writer.

Long story short...my new burner is a Toshiba SDR5372BK10000. I checked over at videohelp.com for some insight into that player (courtesy of the link in Blutach's sig-thanks again ) and I didn't see any good or bad comments about it.

Here's the problem though: I have tried burning 2 different DVDs with it using my usual process, ripping them to the hard drive with DVD decrypter and then burning through DVD Shrink. For some odd reason though, at various points in this process my computer shuts down and restarts! A blue screen pops up and says that Windows has encountered an error and is shutting down for the protection of the computer. Then it restarts and there's an error message window that says Windows has recovered from a serious error. I'm certain it has something to do with the new burner, because it only happens when I run programs that involve the burner...i.e. DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

Can anyone out there help me with this one?

Check your system for IRQ conflicts...

Sounds as if your computer is over heating. (Mainly your CPU)

Is your computer over clocked? Enough fans inside the case?

          Possible RAM problems...?
Try running a Mem test, to eliminate this

I just got the computer back from service. New motherboard, new processor, new DVD Writer, new hard drive. RAM was tested and found to be okay, I am very new to diagnosing computer problems. I'm not sure how to check for IRQ problems or to test memory.

Where I'm at now is thinking it is possibly my video card drivers. Does that make sense to anyone out there?

            EDIT:

I have successfully run a DVD movie with this DVD drive, and I have also successfully burned an MP3 CD-R. Could it possibly be a problem with DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter that is causing this?

When the system re-starts and you get the "Windows has receovered from a serious error......" what does it say in More info?

Do you have all the latest Windows updates installed?

I would get that error message, everytime I rebooted after a "Blue Screen of Death" screen. Swapped out hard drives and it went away.

                  Thanks for your help everyone.

The error messages I've recieved on the Blue Screen are:

                  PFN_List_Corrupt

                  and

                  Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area

It only happens when I'm running DVD decrypter and DVD shrink...other than those applications the drive and the computer are working fine.

In the windows has recovered from a serious error screen, in the more details section it references programs in the temp directory. I don't have the actual screen shot. When it happens again I'll post it. The only thing I remember is that one of the files listed ended in .xml.

                  Thanks again for your help.

.XML is similar to HTML but more advanced.

Okay, I have narrowed it down to being a problem with the burner itself I think. I have successfully backed up a movie onto the hard drive without burning it. Trouble is, I have also used DVD decrypter to rip the DVD using the same drive. It's all very confusing.

@ Mig$y-I took a look at the page setting from the link you gave me, and everything there looks good. However, I'm not really sure what I'm looking at. Sorry...guess I'm not that bright when it comes to this. A lot of what you guys have suggested looking into, its the first time I've seen any of it.

Okay, I got the error again. This time while burning. Here's the details:

                          Error Signature:

                          BCCode: 1a BCP1 : 00041284 BCP2 : DB7AC001 BCP3 : 000047C7
                          BCP4 : C0C00000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

                          Error Report Contents:

                          C:\Docume~1\Monster\Locals~1\Temp\WER72cd.dir00\Mi ni051805-02.dmp

                          C:\Docume~1\Monster\Locals~1\Temp\WER72cd.dir00\sy sdata.xml

Can anyone make anything out of that?

I spoke to the shop that repaired it and they said that if the memory cache on the new motherboard is smaller than I had before then I may not be able to back up DVDs using DVD shrink. That doesn't sound right to me. Anyone else out there ever have this problem?

                            1) Here's some information regarding the "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA":

                            2) "I spoke to the shop that repaired it and they said that if the memory cache on the new motherboard is smaller than I had before then I may not be able to back up DVDs using DVD shrink."

I don't think so. On the other hand, if you previously had 512M of RAM and now have 256M of RAM, while running WinXP with SP2, this could be a problem...

                              "new hard drive"

Did you install the DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter programs "from scratch" or simply somehow transfer them from your previous drive?

You might want to try UNinstalling (NOT simply deleting them) both programs and then rebooting and then REinstalling them (and then rebooting)...
