I've read numerous anecdotal posts on this subject, and they conflict with my own experience. Using using a variety of burners and players over two years and 440 DVDs, I've seen no more problems with labeled disks than bare ones.
Nevertheless, while (in my case, at least) labels don't cause immediate problems, I'm open to a technical argument or empirical evidence that they somehow compromise the longevity of the disk.
So, granting me my own prejudices, does anyone know whether "no stacking ring" permits the use of labels with 22mm (v. 40mm) holes?Joe

Tiger, I'm with you and it's definitely against the conventional wisdom as seen in this forum ...I use labels as well.
I seem to recall that actually someone did provide a response from one of the big DVD makers that conceded that, yes, labels have been shown to cause problems. But I've not had any ...though I'm beginning to think about just printing jewel case inserts.
As to your question,...I'm not sure what exactly you're askingComment

You're the only buddy I have Alien Bay!
In any event, it was Tiger who asked for the link and to whom my post was directed.

"If there is any experimental or empirical evidence that properly applied labels cause problems,"
spend some time looking in these forums, if they work for you then by all means label everything....
i use an envelope label for my discs, i choose to spend the time on the data, rather than the label. after all, it's what's on the disc that people care about.

If I buy blank DVDs advertized as having "no stacking" ring, can I use labels with a
Thanks for the URL. I have been tracking the evolution of this document for a couple of years. It is decidely not a technical document (its title is "A Guide for Librarians and Archvists") and is certainly not a standards document. It is, nevertheless, a credible common-sense document, whose section 5.2.7 "Application of Adhesive Labels" actually led me to the conclusion that labeling is benign provided one follows simple (and obvious) caveats: (1) purchase labels that are chemically and mechanically stable; (2) apply labels in such a manner as to avoid inducing eccentricities in the disc; (3) don't attempt to remove labels.
These are not difficult criteria to meet; Avery/Dennison, for example, claims that their labels are of "archival" quality, and I can attest to the efficacy and accuracy of their applicator.
I purchase high-quality labels, let them dry completely after printing, apply them carefully, and never attemt to remove them. After more than two years, I have experienced the same burn-time failure rate as others report from non-labeled disks, and only one "disk-rot" failure.
Your mileage may vary. If labels cause you problems, don't apply them.
Now, could we please return to my original question:

I wouldn't know about your 22mm question - but no matter who the document is aimed at, that is NIST's view.

Could the "no stacking ring" be referring to a case/spindle that stacks and hold the dvds?
The hole in a DVD should be a standard size and if the labels you have work on the dvd's you have they should work on these also. IMHONot registered Go here and click register to join the Digital Digest Forums

i believe the answer to the original question is yes...why not? you might have to be really careful to ensure it's centered..."One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century". Jack The Ripper - 1888

I just found that some DVD's have a stacking ring
DVD 5 and DVD 9 Face:
Outside Complete Diameter = 118 mm (millimeters)
Stacking Ring Diameter = 37 mm
Center Hole Diameter = 15 mm
It must be the ring that bumps out on the bottom of the DVD's I have. So DVD's with no stacking ring must be flat on both sides. The label goes on the top so there should not be a problem.
