Having problems burning is it the discs or my burner?

This is the first time Ive run into problems with this brand. I bought a 25 pack of TDK 8X DVD-R's and so far Ive had 4 coasters. Its only been happening when I Copy it directly on to a blank dvdr and what Im getting is the blockiness and distortion on the copy dvd so Ive had to rip them with dvdshrink which when I do that and reburn they come out flawless. I thought it might be a speed issue as I was able to make one burned at 4x speed which was ok but Ive never had this issue with this brand before......

What could be going on? is it the blanks or is my burner starting to die? I only got it in at the end of last year?

I am not sure I understand when you say "I copy it directly on to a blank dvdr". What procedure are you using when you do that? The "blockiness and distortion" would lead me to believe you are using to much compression. But you contradict yourself saying that when you use DVD Shrink, they come out flawless.

So what programs are you using if your not using DVD Shrink first?

see below to make sure you're using compatible media in the first place, also lower burn speeds(4x or lower) yeild better results...

What I am using instead of shrink first is a dvd creating/burning software that came with the dvd burner and up until I got those dvdrs I didnt have a problem. What I mean is before I use dvdshrink I use the base program above which copys/fits the movie on the original disc onto the dvdr.

What happens now is the disc will be fine up until a certain moment of the dvd then the blocks start happening, followed by distortion then then the dvd freezes. Another interesting thing is I used a 2x dvdr today to burn to and although it took nearly a hour or so it burned a flawless copy.

When I use shrink however after it rips the movie and I burn them that way they come out with out problems .

I asked a friend at the cd store I go to and he said the very same thing about compression so how do I fix this?

"up until I got those dvdrs I didnt have a problem."

did you look to see media compatibility?

full disc or re-author in dvd shrink? what compression?

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
            • Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
            • How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Screen Shot Below:

If you use other programs besides DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 and DVD Shrink 3.2, I can't really hope you. All you need is those 2 programs.

Try updating your firmware. Taiyo Yuden is great media! Although, you may have got some fakes. Best to go by the "Media ID" rather than the outer packaging.
