I would suggest you keep the hard disks on the same IDE cable and the burner and reader on the other IDE cable. To mix both hard disk and burner on the same cable is not good.

For the bitsetting to work - I think the best way is to download a modified firmware with automatic bitsetting. You can find some of them here: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/25x0.html

For your discs - I don't know what dye they have. You could check it out with www.dvdinfopro.com . Found this in another page:

Thanks for your reply. That's interesting - in the past, I have been advised to keep a writer on a seperate cable to the main HDD. Do you know what the reason is to keep the HDDs together and the DVD drives together?

Please forgive the stupid questions, but I am new to all this DVD burning malarky, although I am an IT bod!

I didn't know anything about bitsetting - so had a search and found this on www.booktypefaq.com

"Use the bitsetting (Set Booktype) feature in your bitsetting software to set your DVD+R/DVD+RW/DVD+R DL Media (Only DVD+R/+RW Media) backup to DVD-ROM for much higher compatibility with older DVD players and Game Consoles such as XBOX and PS2. Bitsetting is done during the burning process when bitsetting DVD+R Media. You can also set/change your DVD+RW Media's bitsetting/booktype, but the difference is that you can be bitset DVD+RW Media even AFTER you have burned it."

What is the relevance of the dye tpe used in the media? can this cause problems?

Easiest way I can think to explain it is, if the HD and the Drives are on the same IDE channel, they in turn fight each other. Although, if they are on different IDE channels, they work together more efficiently.

The type of dye used can be the difference between a successfully burn or a coaster. Certain drives like and dislike certain dye types. Usually the lower quality dye used, the more problems you will encounter. Like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for. (Sometimes those $15-20 bargains aren't such a bargain if you can't use them cause of the dye.)

HDD on the same channel

The reason for keeping your HDD and CD/DVD drives seperate is that your harddrive will automatically default to the slower speed of your cd/dvd drive. Slowing your system. However, I have come across the same information stating that to burn cd to cd or dvd to dvd - your drives have to be on different ide channels. Otherwise, use your harddrive as a mediator - and, go from cd or dvd to harddrive then, back to your writable cd-r / rw etc....
