    Double Layer Playback Problem

I've just started doing this and I've read all the info I can get my hands on. I'm using an external Mad Dog Megastor 7 in 1 16x DVD -+ R -+ RW Double Layer (MAD DOG MD-16XDVD9A2 USB Device) in device manager. I am using Memorex DVD+R DL as my media. It says in my drive instructions that I may need to update my firmware to burn with the bits set to DL but when I downloaded and ran the utility it said my current version (1.F3) was the same as the one it woudl upgrade to. (So I don't think that is the problem) I tried to make 1:1 backup of a disc (Not on any prblem list I can find) and I did it with DVDdecrypter exactly as in the "To Do A Backup Wihtou DVD Shrink" section of the DVD Shrink for Dummies Post by Cnythia. (Basically an ISO read and ISO write) The only thing I did not fiddle with was the little "book" icon in ISO write mode because my hardware was not a selection. Everything works fne until playback. The menu takes forever and the movie is choppy as sin form the get go. I've read as many posts on DL problems as I can find but everyone else having this problem is saying they did the burning with Shrink which I made sure not to. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Also, quick question, What is the difference between Dual Layer and Double Layer and DVD+DL and DVD-L? And what is recommended?
    Thank you.

I would try a different make of DVD+R DL. Have you tried playing the disc in the computer to see if it does the same thing. If it does, then it is probably the disc at fault.

DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL are different. Some burners can do both (my Pioneer 109 can) and some burners can only do DVD+R DL (LG 4163 for example).

DVD+R DL is the best for compatibility. Some burners such as my Pioneer 109 will automatically set the DVD to DVD ROM. This is the little book thing you mention and is called bitsetting. It is possible that your burner doesn't automatically set the DVD+r DL to DVD ROM. There is a FAQ about it.

DVD-R DL is still new and very few DVD players can read the discs. The specifications for the format has only recently been finalised. I would imagine new DVD players have a much more chance of the discs working.

A ISO read and write with DVD Decrypter is the best way to do a 1:1 backup.

You're taking a few chances there NoAppRsn.

      1. An external DL burner - this burner has not got the best rep
      2. Memorex disks - Use Verbatims. Burn them at 2.4x

      Dual layer = -R disk
      Double layer = +R disk

For booksetting - see the link in my sig.

At this stage, I would agree with nwg - +R DLs are the way to go. There's quite a bit of variablility around with the -Rs, so much so their capacity is not a set number.

Ok great thanks. I guess then I just have a few more questions. First off, I was getting the issues while playing back on a newer model, slim PS2 but did not see any hiccups (That I coudl see with the naked eye) when using my living room VD player. (PS2s honestly aren't as good as far as DVD player are they?)

Second, with the bit setting issue, I want a DVD+R to be set as a DVD Rom right? And that is the default setting? when doing a straight ISO read to ISO write with decrypter? Or is this specific to hardware? Firmware and picking a booksetting aside the original 1:1 DL backup I made is listed as as a DVD-ROM on the InCD tab in properties in my computer. So I AM all good there I think.

Finally, does setting the Book Type to DVD ROM affect layer break at all? DVDdecrypt sets the layer break properly on a 1:1 ISO read/write copy, correct? And this is irrelevant to the book type setting?

Hey, you guys have been great. This has to be the biggest wealth of knowledge on something I have ever seen. Thanks a bunch.

You are correct. PS2 are not very good DVD players as well as other computer game consoles. I would expect double layer discs to be even worse.

Some burnes do betsetting manually and some do it automatically with DL. Tests revealed that compatibility was much better with bitsetting. Most manufacturers since have activated bitsetting automatically. It does sound like you are ok with that.

It won't affect the layer break at all. Doing a DVD D ISO read and write will match the original every time. The booktype only affects if a player will read the disc or not.

          Thanks,

The info has taken a couple of years to put together along with Cynthia's and other members great guides to make it easier to go through.
