    USB Burning

Well I have seen a few threads lately that seem to ignore
the obvious, burning a dvd with an external drive on a usb1 port
    works or doesn't??????????????????????
At 1x you are still pushing the envelope????????????

Where's the FAQ relating to this issue?

The ones I have seen all recommend USB2. 1.1 ain't good enough.

Since we are dealing with "newbies" with older hardware and they haven't a clue
as to how computers work, maybe there should be a minimum hardware FAQ or something, most of the problems seems to be in the shrink forum.
Maybe I should have posted there!

DVD & USB transfer rate considerations
        • USB 1.1 maximum data transfer rate = 12 Mbps (megabits per second)
        • FireWire (IEE 1394) max data transfer rate = 400 Mbps
        • USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed USB) max data rate = 480 Mbps
Here is a chart showing the data transfer rates at common DVD R/W speeds.
        • DVD 1x = 11.08 Mbps = CD 9x
        • DVD 2x = 22.16 Mbps = CD 18x
        • DVD 4x = 44.32 Mbps = CD 36x
        • DVD 6x = 66.48 Mbps = CD 54x
        • DVD 16x = 177 Mbps
Note CD speeds are the approximate equivalents based on data transfer rates.

As you can see a USB 1.1 is too slow for any DVD use other than viewing a movie in 'real time'.
USB 1.1 transfer rate is too slow for Reading or Burning a DVD even at 2x speed.

            @Taelon
If you ever find a usb2 interface that does much more than 12MB/s
sustaned let me know, firewire easily does over 20MB/s.
Bits is confusing, easier to just stay with Bytes and use the factor of 10,
            close enough considering error control.
Now E-serial will make it all obsolete soon enough, that smokes!

When I first got my external burner (lite-on ldw851s), I only had usb1 ports on my pc. I must've burned about 40 discs before I got usb2 ports installed. The first burns I did were coasters, but they were on dvd-r discs. I then tried dvd+r discs which worked fine. I still have those burns and play them regularly. In fact one of them, toystory, is played every day, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day. My 3 year old can't get enough of it. It did, however, take if I remember correctly, about 90 mins to burn the 4.35 gb of data. But it worked. I always thought that the led light on the front of my burner had two colours, green for reading and flashing orange for burning. It was only after I got the usb2 installed that I saw the constant red when it is in full burning. So, I guess it depends on the make of the burner and the type of discs used if you are to be successful burning with usb1.

              Regards

              Joe.

joe113, As you can see from the chart I posted, USB 1.1 will only burn at the effective rate of about 1x speed because it just can't push the data thru any faster. I didn't say it couldn't be done, just that USB 1.1 can't burn at 2x speed

Apologies, I took this for meaning that dvd's cannot be burned with usb 1.1

Don't worry your burning on a usb1(sucessfully) seems to be more the
exception than the rule, matter of fact you are the first I have heard that
got away with it, but we usually only hear of the problems. The 90 minute burn times sound right for my experience with data transfers on usb1,
which seems to max out about 900KB/s. Almost 6x times slower than
4x burning. What program did you burn with? If 2x is better than 4x,
then 2/3 x must be durn good, vbg!

You're absolutely right that if you take it out of context, it's what I said. But I also said:
USB 1.1 transfer rate is too slow for Reading or Burning a DVD even at 2x speed.
I congratulate you for sucessfully burning a DVD over a USB 1.1 port, you've apparently got the patience of 'Job'. You might also want to consider that the availability of write once media that can be burned at 1x speed is getting to be extremely difficult to find, many are complaining about trying to find 2x speed media.

I could change my original post, but I'm not going to encourage people to try to burn over USB 1, there's too many potential pitfalls IMHO.

I used sonic dx to burn, but it would only do it properly on + discs. After a while I got sick of waiting 90 minutes for it to finish so I got usb2.
