DVDRom Read speed

I have a quick question that I hope you all will be able to help me with

I have a Samsung SH-D162C DVD Rom 16X which I use to rip DVD's when backing them up this is a new addition to my process (having only installed it recently).

Not being a hardware guru I would assume that the DVD Rom would read every DVD at 16X but it does not seem to be doing this I have noticed using Nero CD-DVD Speed that different DVD's will cause the DVD Rom to read at different speeds for example when I backed up my copy of "A few good men" it read the DVD at 16X (great cut the ripping time down) but when I backed up my copy of "Harts War" it read the DVD at 8X (not so great but still acceptable) any previously copied DVD it reads at 4X

1. Has anybody had problems with this drive before

2. Does the DVD dictate at what speed the Rom reads it at

3. Or if anybody knows of another reason why it maybe doing this

The ripping speed is actually variable. Have a look at it as it goes through a DL disk. It builds up to a maximum then gets slower again. This is because it starts on the inside and fewer sectors are passing under the laser per revolution of the disk. At the edge, much more sectors are passing for a singular revolution (at Constant Angular Velocity) and you get maximum ripping performance. But then the DL reverses and reads data on the second layer back towards the middle (getting slower).

Now, on a DVD-5 (single layer), it builds and builds to a maximum at the end.

And yes, I have found some disks read slower than others.

I have noticed in the past that the speed the DVD Rom reads at increases as it goes through the process and thou my thoughts where not as technical as yours I more or less came to the same conclusion

What has me mythed was that different DVD's seemed to limit the Max read speed of the Rom this was very evident when testing the drive with Nero put in one disk it will start climbing at 6X and then climbs steadily through out the drive speed test and peaks at 16X

Put another DVD in it starts at 2X and peaks out at 8X (this being more common)

All the DVD's I have used where pristine and my BenQ burner handled them all at 16X when testing that drive with Nero drive speed. Anyhow I am not overly concerned because it really only adds 5 to 10 minutes extra onto the process and if I am in a real hurry I will rip and burn with the BenQ

dvd's are different, you have factory pressed single and dual layer
burned dvd+/- r/rw media and now dual layer
of course the read speeds are all different

Hi Steve, The thing you need to realize is when they advertise it as a 16x reader, that is Max speed and that applies to any manufacturer. I doubt you'll find an optical drive on the planet that can read at 16x speed across an entire disc. I'd say your results are pretty typical. Results will vary based on whether a title has CSS encoding, as well as whether it's a pressed or burnt disc.

I couldn't find test results for your specific drive, but the Samsung SH-W162 burner is probably pretty similar. See this page for the read rate transfer graphs, but don't get too discouraged if you go to the read error correction tests on the following pages, the drive did outstanding.
