Problems with external burner

Hi All,

I have been burning with my desktop PC and an internal buner with no problems. For reasons that aren't important here, I am now having to burn with my laptop and and external USB2.0/Firewire burner and so far I've made a lot of coasters and 1 good dvd. I am using the latest version of Nero, DVDFab, and DVD shrink. I have tried burning with Nero, DvdDecrypter, and ImgBurn. My external burner (Cyberhome EX162E-A) has both USB and Firewire connections. I am using the USB connection and I'm wondering if that's the problem and whether buying a Firewire PCMCIA card might help. Before I do that, I would appreciate it if someone couldd have a lokk at this Nero log and give me some help.

Read and implement the Golden Rules of Burning. Especially read the bit about USB burners an ensure your ports are capable of handling this.

What media are you using?

Get rid of InCD and ensure firmware is up to date.

Hi Les,

I ahd read the Golden Rules, but had skipped the one about uninstalling InCD, so I have now uninstalled it. I then created my files with DVDFab, used DVDShrink t create an ISO, and used ImgBurn to burn the DVD. Since this is an external burner, I made sure the only other USB device attached to my laptop was my mouse and I burned at 1X. Still got a coaster. Here's the ImgBurn Log below. Any ideas?

with an 80 gig hard drive in a laptop it's almost positive you have usb2
which should handle burning at 2.4 easily

which leaves firmware
cyberhome doesn't seem to have any for your external just an internal version

the media is not too fast and should work with old firmware, but not grade a quality by any means, which brand did you use?

Hi Chewy,

I'm using Phillips. Been using them for over a year on my desktop system. But the desktop system is going away and I'm stuck with the laptop. I'm beginning to wonder if the burner is a dog. I can still return it. Does anyone have a recommendation for an external burner?

CyberHome has practically no information on this burner and no firmware updates. I just sent an email to their support department, but I doubt their answer will be useful.

nec 3550, 80$ total?
I don't like to dish hardware but you said it first.
Tigerdirect? they are ok but do dump some crap on market

I like that idea. I was going to eBay my LG Super Multi, but maybe I'll just return the Cyberhome and get an external case for the LG. At the very least, it'll rule out the burner as the source of the problem

Just thought I'd let you know that I returned the CyberHome burner, put my old LG burner into an external case (made by Inoi) plugged it in and everything works fine. Thanks for your suggestions!

I have all the software to burn dvds on my new dell computer and I found out today that I only have a cd rewriteable drive. can you walk me throught exactly what I need to buy without all the abriviations, please? thanks.

mm.. what do u mean by building own external dvd burner ? Means buying an internal dvd burner and a casing as recommended above ?????
