Burning speed depend from the combination of burner/firmware/media.
With my benq1640 usually I burn @12x (both 16x certified media and 8x certified media) with very good results. But I use only high quality media. With not so good quality media I burn @ certified speed of the media. Right now I have 8x and 16x certified media, so I burn @ 8x and 12x (benq drives have a bad firmware issue in 16x burnings not solved until now).
With my liteon 1693 (that too bad don't allow me overspeed) usually I burn @12x my 16x certified media and @ their certified speed all other media.
I burn with 4x even though I had succesful burn with 8x and 16x with vertibal before. I could tell the vibration of 8x and 16 x are alot more I just want to keep my burner for a few more years let say I will burn 2000-4000 before it go down
