Problems burning DVD-R with Panasonic deck

I own a Panasonic DMR-HS2 deck that has a hard drive. When I first bought the deck a couple of years ago, I had no problem burning DVDs, but lately the last several DVD-Rs I've tried to burn programs on are unplayable. I tried playing them on my portable Panasonic DVD player here recently, and the picture started breaking up and finally the player could no longer play the disc. I tried to put the disc back in the DMR-HS2, and the deck couldn't read the disc and the deck simply turned itself off. When I turned the power back on, the display read that it was in recover mode.
I would like to point out that the deck has no problems at all recording on a DVD-RAM. As a matter of fact, since I've been having problems burning DVD-Rs, I've decided to archive everything on DVD-RAM discs now since I cannot burn on a DVD-R.
Can anyone help me with this? Do I need to use a lense cleaner, or do I need to take it somewhere to be serviced? Thanks for any replies.
