Sorry, I don't understand your question. Do you want to burn a 16x media @4x?

Even if I suggest you don't do this because quality will be bad, what burner/firmware do you have?

I must say that 16x media are burned better @12x. Burning these @6x or less can give you a set of coasters.

Being your drive on USB, maybe you want to burn slower than 12x, but I suggest you don't go under 8x. Can you do a scan of a media burned @8x?

Anyway, for what I know, the only way to change writing speed is to change it manually with a tool like omnipatcher. But this invalidate warranty, and can be very media consuming, because require to find the right strategy swap to apply on the media

The slower the better is no more true. With high speed certified media the rule is to burn around their certified speed.

With very high quality media such as taiyo yuden I'm able to butn 8x certified media @12x with very good results

The best solution is to buy slower media. I tryied to burn a 16x media @6x and obtained a coaster. If you don't plan to buy a new burner, then you should plan to buy a supply of low speed media: they are becoming rather rare to find

Normally 16x discs cannot be burned at 4x or slower because they are made for faster speeds. 8x media can be burned just fine at 4x however. My opinion (don't quote me!) is that you should burn at half the written burn speed unless Chewy/Geno tells you otherwise

It's more complicated than that, things always are. Some 8x media may be better than almost all 16x media. For example, my sony 8x +R(Made in Japan)(TaiyoYuden). It burns as well or better than Verbatim 16x +R media @ 8x.

You just have to experiment to find what your burner likes and at what speed
                    it makes the best disks.

And the only thing you can count on is, that perfect combination is temporary, sooner or later your burner's gonna fail or the media will change or windows will go belly up.

Yeah I know, but for n00bs, the safest way is to burn at half the speed marked on the package (cuz we all know that using the max speed is bad)
