Please help a newbie who hasn't found the answers using search - Nero/Coasters/etc

    Hi gang.

This is my first post here.

I bought these "Sonic DVD-R 8X Thermal White Printable Bulk (No Stacking Ring) by Shop4Tech" at Shop4Tech.

These could be the root of my burning problems - I'm not sure.

Anyways, I am in the process of backing up a bunch of DVDs in my collection, and I have had various problems.

First off, not all of the DVDs have issues, but several of them suffer pixelation and choppiness at the end of the DVD. I have seen people post that this is due to bad DVD-Rs.
What doesn't make sense is that I have a couple that were burned at 8x and play fine and then when I started burning at 4x I have DVD-Rs that skip and freeze.

So I was hoping that this is just due to cheap DVDR media - but I also have backups of my South Park DVDs, and the DVDs start skipping and freezing right off the bat.

So right now I feel pretty clueless.

I ran the Nero Toolkit utilities the Green/Red box Test came up all green on the South Park one, but then I ran the Transfer Rate test and it looks nothing like the way it should. The lines are very jaggedy.

Please help - if it's an issue with my burner, then I need to know within the next 20 days while my Dell Laptop is still under warranty.

My burner is a Sony DVD+-RW DW-Q58A and my laptop is an Inspiron 6000.

Your immediate help is extremely appreciated.

    Sam

Could it be that I need to update the Firmware?

Right now when I run the detect Firmware tool I get:

      Device: Sony DVD+-RW DW-Q58A Firmware Version: UDS1

I downloaded the zip file for Firmware Version: UYS2.

Can someone tell me 1: Is this the right file, and two - will it make a difference if I update the firmware in this case?

I don't want to destroy my DVD R recorder by flashing with the wrong firmware.

      Your help is appreciated

The only firmware available for Sony DW-Q58A is version YUS2. But you said that you couldn't flash it due to "No matched drive detected". It's strange though. Please try again from the link below for YUS2 hopefully to have better result:

benbryant - samtheminuteman is using DVD-R media. Almost all DVD-R media does not show a "Media Specific" in Nero Logs.

that's true, as in this case

i have seen at least twice though here at DVF where it was pretty much full.
