    Need help with new burner!

Just got my spanking new nec nd-3550A in the mail and am all excited. I'm planned on sending my cd-rom to the parts bin so as not to have to swap out discs when backing up. I presently use the nd-2510A to do everything.
Although I've read here that it's preferrable to use a dvd-rom combined with a cd burner to save the life of the dvd drive, well that ship has sailed. Plus the 2510 doesn't owe me a thing, especially considering how prices of new drives keeps falling.
So I must defer to the opinions of the many experts here at this forum for the best way to install my new unit so as to get the most out of this set-up in regards to which should be the master or slave. I would certainly like to take advantage of the faster writing speed of the 3550, but not at the expense of quality of burn.
Also I was wondering if either the whole drawer or the faceplate can be swapped out since my gateway tower, in vega silver, has the curved front. Screw drivers don't intimidate me; I've already had to pull apart the 2510 after leaving the shipping donut on top of the disc from a new cake box (it was late, pretty lame I know) and jamming the drawer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Unless they can be standalone masters I would just use the new dvd burner,
I don't like having similar devices made by the same company sharing a cable.
Flashing firmware and dueling firmwares at bootup?
