    File formats?!

i have a number of video files that i want to put onto DVD but the programs wont let me burn them, these files are files such as AVI, MPG etc how can i burn them onto one dvd to play back in a DVD player? i have tried using nero and clonedvd but neither works. is there anything that i can use to just add to a compilation and then burn them n they can play in a dvd player? or any programs i need? sorry if this is very vague, if any more info is needed just ask and i will answer them! thanks in advance.

You will need to convert them to either Divx (for a Divx player) or MPEG2 (for normal DVD player) and author using an authoring tool.
