disc capacity

I've used shrink and nero for a few years without any major problems. I recently upgraded to Nero 7 premium and now shrink is reporting my DVD's as not having enough space to write to. I use automatic compression and have never encountered this error before. Nero is showing the discs as having 4.38Mb capacity and shrink won't go below 4.464Mb. This used to be a simple process - analyze disc, insert blank disc and hey presto!, burned disc. Is shrink the problem? Is Nero the problem. I'm pulling my hair out. Please help!!

go to edit/pref/ and where it says dvd-5 move the tab to custom and lower your shrink size manually

thanks BR7, I've done that and it works. What I don't understand is why I have to do that at all, given that I've used the defaults for a long time without a problem. I'm halfway thru a Ritek 50 disc spindle that until now have all worked as 4.7Gb discs. I even opened a new pack just to make sure that the discs weren't the problem. The only thing that has changed is the nero update. I'm not convinced that isn't the problem. Any advice?

what is the burn speed and type of ritek? or the mid code? Some types
aren't that good. Earlier versions of nero 7 were very buggy.

what does it matter the type of disc or burn speed? I've used half the spindle without incident. The only thing that's changed is Nero. Is there any way to 'tell' Nero what capacity dvd I'm using?My burner is an LG GSA4163B.

Since you have Nero go to Nero/Tools/CD DVD Speed
Once it's open click on Disc Info This will also give chewy the MID (Media ID) he was asking about you should see this

@powrtoch - I dunno it could be a thing with Nero 7 . What was the size of the rip folder as reported by windows?

Also in shrink it had this for Deep Analysis, maybe a lot of compression was needed on the rip

Deep Analysis

The deep analysis option will encode your DVD in two passes. This will take significantly longer, but it serves two purposes:

1. It will improve video quality by allowing DVD Shrink to better distribute the required compression throughout the various scenes in your DVD.

2. It will ensure that DVD Shrink accurately meets the target size.


Edit - I don't have Nero 7 - I stopped at 6.6.0.18
