using DL disc as a single layer

Is there any advantage in using a +R DL disc as single layer disc when you burn?

The reason I ask... I have about 10 +R DL discs that are not of the highest quality. I still want to try and use them. One disc I recently burned, i noticed that when I played it in my laptop it would freeze at the 1 hour mark. I'm guessing that is right around the layer break.
So I'm thinking if I shrink a movie to fit in a single layer, there would be no need to have a layer break. then I could use up these DL discs and not have a problem with playback in my laptop.

Does this theory make sense?

If your discs aren't high quality as a DL disc, then it's doubtful they would be any better as a SL disc....the quality of DL being poor doesn't have anything to do with the layer break, that sounds more like a flaw in the creation and placement of the layer break and the backup method.

You may want to try a Verbatim +R DL.

Actually, yes.

Layer 0 will ALWAYS exhibit lower PIE/PIFs than layer 1. So, if you got el cheapo DLs thast you plan to make into frisbees, you can try to use them as SLs.

Thanks for the info. That's what I thought and you can see it in the graph when you run Nero Speed.

To the other guys above.. I did use Image burn and selected the layer break it recommended.

I have a stack of Verbatims that are the other way 'round. The second layer exibits excellent results in DVDspeed and the first layer is only decent. Is this something that is caused by ImgBurn?

I'd also like to thank you for this bit of info. I bought a large stack of Philips DL discs on sale and was about to toss them until I stumbled on this. I will try one as an SL first.

By the way, is the first layer of a DL disc equivalent to a regular DVD+R or is it only 4.25GB (half of 8.5)?

With ImgBurn, this didn't work, it just made a smaller DL disc with both layers at 2GB each. ImgBurn did not ask me for a layer break point either.
