slow burning

I come for help cause you have been the all mighty answer.
The dvd burner I bought was one reccomended by chewy and so far has been fine.
Past couple of times though it seems to be really slow. Its slowing reading and writing.
I thought maybe it might have something to do with the drives firmware.
Please Advise
