    *New* Benq 1655 not working!

Looks like I have a problem; 1 of my *new* 1655 drives appears to be not working. I bought 2 1655s & 2 1650s back a couple mo. ago when they had that super deal ($30 shipped) on them. I had only used this particular drive, maybe 5 times or so.

Now, when I insert a cd or dvd, the light blinks for maybe 20 seconds, & then goes out. The drive is recognized by the pc as an existing drive, but any attempt to access the drive results in "please insert a disk in the drive". Any suggestions, or is this drive dead already?

DVDD shows this drive, but displays the message "device not ready (medium not present). I didn't know if it would help or not, but I uninstalled the drive & rebooted to see if it would fix - it did not

    Any ideas?

Can you return it? Is the place you purchased the drives reputable?
Can't hurt to speak to customer service. If there is one?

      Hi codajohn,

We are taking about this now on page 3 of this thread. http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=73584

Bought from newegg, they have givin me an RMA; problem is, I can't get a 1655 in return, since they are out of them for good! So, its' either money back or an alternate drive.

      regards, katz

I have a theory that if we could get katz away from the turkey and football long enough he could verify if it's bad or not.

Ummm.... Well, I am a Vegan & I am not really into watching sports (Well, I watch pro wrestling with my son, if you call that a "sport"!)

Actually, I've been outside cutting firewood all day - but we will get to the bottom of this!

I would flash a few firmware before you return it, after flash one test it if it is not work then flash to another one, I brought my 1620 once like that but it only last few months

              Night & Chewy;

I (re)flashed firmware twice on the burner with the BCHB version. It is still showing up as only 4x supported write speed.

was it EOM or retail? I am just curious, I still have one brand new one in box and did not do any thing with it yet

how was the drive hooked up during the flash?

did you download a fresh version of the firmware and flash from safe mode?

Night - it is an oem drive; just came with Nero disc, that's all.

how was the drive hooked up during the flash?

Fresh version, yes - from rpc1. Flashed 2 times in safe mode, didn't seem to fix it. Still showing as 4x only

Edit: I bought three EOM Pioneer 11D,nec 3550 and benq 1650 they were close but not 100% compare to the retail that others have and I have

does cdspeed disk info show the same thing?

I think you may be on to something NightTran, Benq's have that fancy overspeed feature, that's what may be hosed, not the firmware or hardware?

Imgburn will turn on overspeed for the drive, permanently or temporarily.
