    write error burning dvd -r

    hello,

just got my samsung se-s164l external dvd burner. i did a couple of successful burns (using nero backitup) on the local pc using dvd -r, however when i tried backing up files on another pc on my local home network i repeatedly got nero backitup "write error" at the end of the burn. i checked the forum for similar problems but couldn't find anything obvious and being new to nero and dvd burners i don't really know where to start. a few pointers pls! below are details of my nero log file which i don't really understand. one anomaly i did notice: the "recorder" was correctly identified as a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S162L (my external samsung se-s164l burner). however under "Scsi-Device-Map" only the LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163 (my internal cd-rom drive) was listed. shouldn't the TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S162L also be listed here? tia.

You may want to download nero 6.6.0.18

    1. Buy good media (like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim) that is suited to your burner AND players (see here). In particular, steer clear of cheap stuff like CMC Magnetics. Cheap media is the major source of burning problems. ONLY use Verbatim disks for dual layer burns.

You may also want to try IMGburn it is free and an awesome burner

    IMGburn ** ** Nero 6.6.0.18 **Intelli Type Pro 6.1 **

judging from the age of these components I would assume this computer does not have usb2

it would be worth a try to make the drive a share on the newer computer and see if you could burn accross the network, might handle a 4X burn?

the network(if cat5/10/100) would be about 10 times faster than usb1

      and those blanks are crap

yes, it does have usb2. pc is a dell gx260, 512mb. as i mentioned in the post, it's strange that under "Scsi-Device-Map CdRomPeripheral :" only the LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163 (which is my internal read-only cd-rom drive) was listed, but not the TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S162L which is my new burner?

        another problem to solve?

the pc i've got the external burner connected to is actually the faster of the 2 pcs being 2.0gz the other being a 1.7gz laptop. so you're suggesting a slower burn might work? under which conditions will i be able to achieve the 16x on a dvd -r?

        it is indeed cat5/10/100.
and those blanks are crap *noted!*
        thanks for the comments.

          Scsi-Device-Map CdRomPeripheral
          shows internal drives only

usb2 is resource intensive and speeds will be limited to 8X at best on an optimized computer

backitup is not a good test for showing speed issues

internal dvd burners and premium media do well to achieve 16x speed for the last part of the burn

the transfer rate test will show more(step3)
