Anyone know where I can find a decent external 16x DL RW-/+ dvd burner online at a cheap price?

P.S. not sure if this is the right forum

LiteOn EZ-Dub 16X External DVD Burner Drive

    NEC ND3550 external 16X Dual-layer DVD +/-RW Burner

    Are these any good?

    nobody has any suggestions?

Mine is a LiteOn shw 1635s, I'm sure it's not the highest quality but it I have more then put it through it's paces and it's performed well for me. I have replaced it once, had the extended warranty so it was replaced for free. I also have an internal DL that came with my pc, so I read with it and write to the external.

That is what I have been using and have not had any problems except for the ones that I created by trying to burn at too high of a burn speed.

even usb2 had problems pushing data fast enough for an 8X dvd burn, that's 11 MB/s and close to it's practical limit, firewire seems to handle 8X better

usb is much more resource intensive also, run lean and mean and don't multitask

@ chewy i get about 12x with my usb2 to my external burner that is a 16x, is there anything u need special to hook up the firewire or just hook the firewire cord up?

i also used to have problems with it being able to write sometimes but it would read find anytime, it was on its vertical stand then i took it off it and sat it horizontal and havent had a prob since now back to the topic any suggestions on a 16x dvd burner that i can buy online? if so please include link, also trying to go for under the $100 mark

@anonymez i see people do this all the time and not get warned or whatever for it, and it doesn't mean i was bumping its just that its easier to use the quick reply instead of going back up and clicking edit, so what if i'm to lazy to go edit, i could understand if i was putting like 5 or more back to back with no meaning to the topic

this is an interesting thread going sour, drhardware and I have given you some sound advise based on years of experience

in the interest of furthering this exchange please prove your point with some data

I realize a memorex drive is a poor test instrument, what are the burn log times for these 12x burns?

If you really want fast external burns there are a few enclosures listed over at cdfreaks where the real geeks have attained 15x speed thru usb2, the vast majority have problems at 8x.

A good 16x burn is about 6-7 minutes tops
                            A 12x burn is 7-8 min tops
an 8x burn in the 8-10 minute range

off the shelf firewire burners easily attain real 12x speed

The rules are clear. Let's get back on topic please.
