I've done exactly what it said to do in #3 and the results now read

    Primary IDE Channel

    Device 0
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if avaliable
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode Version 2

    Device 1
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if avaliable
    Current Transfer Mode: PIO Mode

    Secondary IDE Channel
    Device 0
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if avaliable
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode Version 2

    Device 1
    Device Type: Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode: DMA if avaliable
    Current Transfer Mode: N/A

Is this what I was trying to acheive?

I would double check the jumpers and cabling on the hard drives, something might be wrong there?

Is this an old dell computer?

Dell Dimension 300 - I got it in July'05 and have been adding my own bits and pieces to it since then to try and keep it upto date.

Like I said I only installed the 2nd hard drive on Monday, this is the one that isn't giving a DMA.

I would use a new 80 wire cable, use master/slave jumpers, not cable select

verify bios is set up for auto dma on all drives
