    Drive problems?

After reading Garys thread I decided to run my own tests and was shocked to see the results. It seems, since I first started burning DVD'S my drive has been having problems at the same spot. (See pic) no matter what media I have used. I took a crosssection of DVD'S that I have burned and what I found was my drive starts having problems at about the 2.8 gig mark. At around 2.8 gigs I watch my scores go from 94%-96% down to 20%-30% range. The crosssection covered first DVD'S burned to the ones I burned last night. The scores were always consistent end quality scores between 20-30%

My question is: is this normal? Has my drive perhaps always been bad? If so what is a very good drive.

Dose the scores really matter? I really don't notice play back problems on my tv's. But non of my TV's are ove 35 inches.

My firmware is the latest. I use good media ty's or verbs. I burn at 4X and I don't multi task when burning.

    Thanks

You must have some very good dvd players

those pioneer's don't do very good scanning but you pif's are way too high

do a few run test/transfer rates on old/new burns

if you get a smooth read curve/graph then you should disregard those quality tests

it sure would be a waste of a lot of good disks and time if those scans are true?

well as long as you can recover the data and reburn sometime?

maybe you could scan a few of those discs in a friend's/other burner that is a known good scanner, to really determine the condition of them.

When I first started on here, that's what my scans looked like, burning with a POJ BTC drive. But, I was also using junk discs (mostly) & having playability problems, i.e. near the end of the movie it would freeze.

I had to reburn much of my library from the originals, since the backups were junk.

Thanks for all the help, Chewy

(Chew, geno, nightran spent much time getting me started on the right track)

@katz very good idea which I followed up on right away.

The pic is of the same disc, started at the same spot. My friends drvie is not a dvd burner however.

@ Chewy So the burning question is: can I safely disregard the quality scans as total crap as far as my reader goes? And since I have over 800 burns on my burner, What burner is high on everyones recommend list?

            thanks

              not really,

And since I have over 800 burns on my burner
              time for a new one

              where's a transfer graph?

As a test, you could burn a disc at maybe 2 gb/ half the size of the disc. See if the burn looks to fail at the same area, near the end of the burn. That would point more directly to the burner failing, instead of a disc issue...

took a little while to figure out what you wanted. I have have'nt spent much time looking at nero until now. I do like it for burning CD's.

I don't know jack about this.

Is it time for a new drive?

                  thanks

the pioneer is still burning ok on verbs and reading the data back good,
can't scan worth a crap tho

find a bad disk and post a trt(transfer rate) or if that second graph was one then use that as a reference

sharper dips in the graph are trouble brewing after the disk decays more

warning, older pioneers(and lg's) read really bad disks after other drives won't

so make sure the pioneer still works before you get a new drive and find out it won't read the old burns

I have not read much on disk decay. I have alway assumed they were good for 20+ years. (?) could you elaborate on this subject a bit more or point me in the right direction. I have searched, but groups word searches don't yeild specific information.

I have ordered a benq from new egg.

I will search for a bad disc and post

                      Thanks
