Since my pioneer dvr-111d started making coasters with the new batches of sony DVD+R disks I bought (mid# D21) I was getting close to throwing both the disks and the drive away and starting from scratch! About 3 out of 5 disks were apparently completing successfully, along with the DVDDD happy sound you get when the burn is complete, but looking afterwards with DVDD would show the status of the disk as being incomplete and the disks could not be opened on the PC or played in a DVD player.
However, despite my feelings that a firmware update would be more or less a waste of time, I found a link for a firmware update at a non pioneer site (I think it was cdfreaks.com). Interestingly enough, the link did indeed point to pioneer's site, but finding the specific file on their website was pretty much impossible......Kinda like they don't even acknowledge that they make that particular drive!
Anyway, after a firmware update to version 1.29, I just burned 6 DVDs in a row with nary a problem. It's also burning faster, 5 minutes and change as opposed to 7 minutes and change.
I was skeptical about a firmware update making a difference in something that was working fine not long ago without it, but I'm a believer now!
