Nero Speed/DVD InfoPlus only work in PIO mode

Aside from some problems getting my new Sony DRU830a (DVD +/- R/RW/RAM)to booktype... I also can not get some programs to work with them unless I set the drive out of DMA into PIO mode. The programs include Nero Speed and DVD InfoPlus. I've already brought one burner back and the second one (made some 3 months later) behaves the same way. So it doesn't look like a defect but a design problem.

When I got the first drive it would burn but would not recognize the just burned disk not even play DVD-ROM movies in Nero Showtime. Sony support had me do the following:

Change IDE Controler to Dual Channel
    Update ASPI
Update firmware (not needed on replacement drive)
Disable CD recording in Drive Properties

It got the movies to play but Speed and InfoPlus still can't work in DMA.

Is there some inherent design defect in this drive? Does it have something to do with it being a DVD-RAM drive? Any help appreciated.

sounds like your computer may be hosed, that's usually the case when someone rma's a drive and the new drive has similar problems

rma's a drive? Please explain. Why would the Sony DRU 630a have been working "fine" (it has about 1000 burns on it and stopped recognizing CDs about 6 months ago. Burns seemed to contain a lot more PIFs than before... but the new drive seems no better. Media?)

I should also note that I'm still running XP SP1.

          Nero Log should be attatched.

I've only made one successful burn on my first DRU830a.... and a couple aborts when I realized I had not switched back to DMA mode.

that's not a nero burn log at all

make a data dvd with nero, make sure dma is on, and post the log

we can fiddle around with this but the sooner we get some real data to analyze the sooner we can guesstimate what the problem is.
