Can't enable device Sony DVD-RW DRU 820A

ok first off i have an Sony DVD-RW DRU 820A, i am running it on a pent.4 windows XP professional serv. pack 2 system. so i also had an Memorex 52X CD/RW USB drive. so i removed it from the external enclosure and inserted the Sony DVD-RW DRU 820A. when i first did this it worked fine but then i reformatted and wont work. i go to the control panel to check the drivers and it says it is not enabled so i hit next to enable it and it says it can't, but it still reads disks and is recognized in "My computer" and i can burn disk image files but not to the disk, also i have tried the firmware patch but it does not seam to work does anyone have any ideas?
