Can I recover harddisk video files

I have a sony rdr-hx710 dvd-harddisk recorder. The harddisk has been accidently formated. With forensic software I saw that all the data still remains on the harddisk. People from Sony told me that the files are stored as vob files, like dvd´s. After copying out this data I am unable to view the vob files, so I suppose there is some information missing. Is there anybody that can help me getting my data back in a viewable format. I tried viewing the files with power-dvd and VLC player. The harddisk is 160 GB and there is no known file-system. So there is only one datafile wich is about 160 GB.
Every 2 Kb there is an new vob-header signature.
I tried copying out a part of a dvd-file this way and that worked but on this harddisk it is not working.

If the forensic sw can't get it, nothing can. But the VOBs should be playable in a software player. Also see if you can recover the IFO and BUP files. If not, you can make new ones with IfoEdit.

Has anything been written to the drive since the format?

If it has then expect any recovery of older data to be incomplete

What program did you use to recover the files on your Sony HD-Recorder?

A friend of mine formatted the harddrive in his Sony HD-recorder and now he is desperate to get the files back...

Depending how bad the drive it could get very pricey.

I have tried with "Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery" and after a very long scan for RAW data, I get 7936290 files in 3212 folders and ALL the files are precise 2048 bytes...

Does anyone know how to get anything usefull out of all the 2KB files ?

What they are are the sectors of data one by one. It will be all but impossible to put them back together with some sort of file pointers.

hmm... that's not good.
All I got are alle these files that are precise 2KB big. There must be another way of getting the files out of the Harddrive...

It is OK that the movies only is playable on the PC and not on the HD-Recorder afterwards.

My daughter lost all of her pictures and about 15 short movie clips on her canon. I tried several recovery software and none worked. I ran across a program called Image Recall which retrieved the photos and the movie clips. About 5% of the photos were only 1/3 1/2 of the whole picture. A couple of the movie clips had a few blank spots in them but over all it did a good job of recovering the photos and movie clips. It is a digital recovery software. i may have posted earlier..... restorer2000 pro now new version available is the best i used....

recovered all stuff frm scsi 200gb drive
recovered all stuff frm sata drives 80 to 250gb
recovered 2 gb of sdcard formated in canon, all pics / vids

these are all i tried myself.yes it takes time to scan all 200gb or soo.

Hint: i found erasing the partition all together help recover 100%. sd card didnt recover atall, i formated again nothin happens, i erased the partition and scaned again, recover all.

Image Recall can't find the harddrive... so that didn't work
Restorer 2000 Pro is able to find the harddrive, and it scans for 8-9 hours and ends up with nothing. So that did,t work either...

So the only program able to find data on the harddrive was Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, but it only produced alot of 2KB files, which I couldn't use for anything...

I think I'll put the harddrive back in the Sony HD-Recorder and consider the old movie files lost.
