Very Slow DVD Burning with Nero 7 Ultra Edition

I am experiencing extremely slow dvd burning using Nero 7 Ultra Edition using the most current updates through 10/1/07. My hardware is a TSST corp TS-H552L CD/DVDR, my operating system is Windows Media Center Edition 2002 SP2 with an Athlon 64 X@ Dual Core 4200+ 2.20 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. I don't know if the issue is with Nero, my hardware, both, or neither. Any diagnostic testing anyone could suggest would be greatly appreciated. The issue is the time currently involved in burning a full 4.7 GB dvd is around 50 min. I have Nero installed on a computer at home with an external dvd drive, also rated at 8X write speed, that usually accomplished this in about 14-16 minutes. Same type of media is being used, and both are +/- drives. If I need to post more info please let me know. And once again any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Nero's tech support is very substandard on issues like this.

Just fyi, I just burned a dvd and it took just a little over 51 minutes. Also my dvd writer is rated for 16X write but I have been using 8X dvd's. I didn't mean to mislead you on the type of writer that I have.

Anyway, when I get to Device Manager and open it up there is no listing for IDE ATA/ATAPI.

But for the Nero log, it would not let me submit it due to being 77700 characters. It asked me to shorten it to 15000 characters. What can I cut and paste for you?

          Thanks again,

reading and following directions is critical in any of this computer stuff, as the guide says there is more than one log in the log file, select the one(copy and paste) that shows your problem

the most recent one will be at the bottom

Sorry about that. I was trying to work and do this at the same time. I simply didn't read that part.

well you have 2 sata hard drives showing up with dma on(dma does not apply to them) so it's evident they are running in some ide emulation mode, you'll have to look for the controller(might be called something else)

after 11 minutes you were less than 25% done, that's consistent with pio mode?

HP computer with an oem samsung burner?

way newer firmware, but that media is crap, might not help

When you say "that media is crap", are you talking about the dvd's themselves? Or about Nero 7? Or the drive itself? I just want to get it fixed/replaced so any specific suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. I will look for the controllers at this time and let you know.

Found them - they are under "Unknown" with 9 total listings - 3 each for the following - 3 of "Primary IDE Channel", 3 of "Secondary IDE Channel", and 3 of "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller". Are there 3 because I have 3 external hard drives connected to my computer via USB 2.0 ports?

Anyway, under one of the Secondary IDE Channel properties there is an Advanced Tab that shows that the Transfer Mode is pulled down to "DMA if available" and the Current Transfer Mode is "PIO Mode" (note that there is no pull down tab associated with this one). These are for Device 0, whatever that means. For Device 1, Device Type is also Auto Detection (like Device 0), Transfer Mode is "DMA if available" and Current Transfer Mode is "Not Applicable" (once again no pull down tab).

Under Primary IDE Channel Properties, Device 0 has the settings of "Auto Detection", "DMA if available", And "Ultra DMA Mode 5". Device 1 has "Auto Detection", "DMA if available" and "Not Appicable".

When you need more info please let me know.

try verbatim but upgrade that firmware

follow the directions for removing the Primary IDE Channel Properties, device 0 is your burner

I will do what you've instructed when I return to my office in the morning, as well as try some different (better) media. I will post my results. Thank you so much for your time.

I deleted the Secondary Channel, it reinstalled it and set it to DMA 2, and all things look good at this time. The media I am using is Maxell DVD-R 8X (I couldn't remember yesterday or I would have told you then).

But I was able to burn a DVD in 8 minutes this morning, a full 4.7G.

Thanks for the help. GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

4 more things to keep an eye on, that aspi could get corrupted and cause a lot of problems

try to use premium media like verbatim

that ide emulation that fooled nero into thinking dma was on might be fixed with updated drivers from your computer manufacturer

that pxhelp is usually a filter driver from sonic/record now and can also get corrupted
