How to save and burn several copies?

I am in the process of getting all my DVD's to the computer and whenever I want to watch something, I just burn it and watch.

Are external HD's the best way to go to store my DVD collection?

I just used DVD Shrink 3.2 to backup a movie and burn it and it worked, but now I am not sure how to burn it at a later time just using the files becuase all my physical DVD's will be sold?

we don't talk about backing up movies any more, we never did talk about backing up ones we don't own(or continue to own)
