    can't burn new TY discs

    hello everyone,

i could really use some help. i've tried to follow all the guides here and the golden rules of burning but i just can't seem to get my new taiyo yuden discs to burn. i'm using the same method as i have in the past with tdk discs and i've hardly had any problems with those discs.

    burning with imgburn.

i can confirm i have the latest firmware for my burner, which is an i/o magic drive: DVDRW IDE1008 0060 (ATA)

my disc manufacture id is: TYG02

    here's the imgburn log:

Once you get a better burner you may want to try burning at 2 or 4 X

      I 07:35:52 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: TYG02) (Speeds: 2x, 4x)
that media doesnt support 1X burning.

yeah, i pointed out that it only supports 2x and 4x speeds, which i find really odd by the way... that's why i tried with 2x the second time around.

is it really the drive? why have i not had problems with my 200+ tdk burns and only with this new taiyo yuden media?

so what drive can i get that gives reliable burns and that imgburn can set book type dvd-rom for? the most popular on newegg seems to be the samsung SH-S203N...

your old(doesn't matter how few or many disks it's burned) I/O Magic was really a BTC made dvd burner, they gave up the ghost and quit trying to manufacture dvd burners.

If you look carefully at this page you see the drive was released over 4 years ago and last firmware was 0060 was 3 years ago

          samsung makes a good drive

thanks, you guys were right. i tried my wife's computer, which has a newer samsung burner and that worked like a charm.

one thing i noticed though, is that imgburn only shows the option to change book type with dvd+r media, not dvd-r. why is this?

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a need to change -r disks, as they play in everything.

                You can't book type DVD-R, only DVD+R.

And, as stated in the owners manual, some of the upscale DVD players from Samsung won't let your convert DVD+R media to DVD-ROM media and still play in their model players. Even a firmware update won't change their decision.

Does that mean they will not permit the booktype change, or that they will permit the change but will not allow the burned dvd to play in their players? If it's the latter, that's really, really weird. By the way, I have a Samsung SH-S203B which I purchased last month from Newegg, and it burns and plays DVD-ROM discs perfectly using ImgBurn...

That is strange, I have 4 TSST burners and all of them automatically set the booktype to ROM.

But I have no samsung player to test, I think I would be very upset if I found out I could not play my disc on a player from the same company as the burner that made it.

I have been told by different people that it is any burnt disc that won't play in the newer Samsung standalones.

Now that sucks big time. So you transfer all of your vhs tapes of your old family movies, etc. to dvd -- only to find out that your spiffy new Samsung player won't play them? I'm with 'copyless'. I'd be really, really pissed...

i tried my newly burned TY disc, that is dvd-r, and that played just fine in my stand alone samsung r157 dvd recorder. i guess the next thing to try would be to get a dvd+r disc, setup my wife's samsung burner to set the booktype on it, burn something, and then see if it will play.

i find it very odd that players can even detect that a disc has been changed from dvd+r to dvd-rom. i thought that was the whole point of booktyping--so stand alone players can play them?

If you set the booktype to DVD-ROM when burning a DVD+R disc the booktype will be changed, but the disc will still be a +R disc (as 'soup' taught me). If you check the burned disc with a disc check utility (e.g. Lite-On's 'Smart Burn Media Check), it will show both the disc type (+R) and the booktype (-ROM). So, I guess it's possible for the firmware in the Samsung players to read the same info and refuse to play it...
