Power DVD 4 won't play .ifo

Hi all, I ripped some chapters off a DVD with Smart-Ripper, copied the IFO file. Try to open it with PowerDVD, but nothing happens. I double-click the ifo file ("Open DVD File on HDD"), the open window closes and nothing happens with PowerDVD.

Make sure that you have the file VIDEO_TS.IFO present as well. PowerDVD never seems able to open DVD files (along with the choice for the languange, subtitles, etc.) without this file present.

The ifo file I had was named video_ts_0.ifo (the 3 vob files named video_ts_1.vob etc.), made a copy of the old ifo file and renamed it video_ts.ifo.
When I open it I get Error Code 89030000, Unknown File Format.

Edit : Tried to open the file with Xmpeg, got the window where you could choose the stream, but never got the player window. Got that window when I opened the vob files though. Anyway the DVD-ROM started to malfunction a little, and I found out that for some unknown stupid reason I had turned DMA off for my CD-RW. I hope the problem was that my DVD-ROM misread the .ifo due to this, will try reripping.

Thanks for trying to help anyway

PowerDVD is not capable of doing this.

PowerDVD can only play a DVD (in DVD mode) from a CD or DVD drive. (with DVD mode, I mean with menu's, language selection, ...)

If you ripped a DVD (and decrypted it) and want to view it from HDD, I suggent you use WinDVD. It's capable of playing a DVD from any discdrive (including HDD and floppy...).

You should, however keep all the DVD's filenames: VIDEO_TS.IFO, without any number.

I suppose your DVD-rip is in a seperate directory? Then yu should go to dos, and type something like:
        subst z: c:\dvdrip

Where "c:\dvdrip" is the directory of your rip, and Z: is the driveletter you wish to use. This command creates a (virtual) drive letter that just maps that directory. Then use WinDVD to open a "DVD" from that "drive".
To remove the drive again, just restart your PC, or type
        subst z: /d

        Cheerz,

Thought PowerDVD 4 played ifo from HDD? Well I'll try WinDVD.

BTW About Xmpeg... I reripped with Smart-ripper and Xmpeg still can't seem to open the ifo file. It can open .vob files allright, but after the stream selection screen I get nothing.

I guess I should post about this in the correct forum, but as I was speaking about it in an earlier post, I thought I might mention this problem here.

            PowerDVD and autolaunching from HDD

You can use DVDLaunch to open DVDs from your hard disk using PowerDVD. It will remove RPC which maybe causing your problems.

Just rip entire DVD, with movie, special features ..., and then PDVD should play it fine from harddisk. Just open video_ts.ifo from directory, which you ripped the DVD to.

Disagree. PowerDVD XP/4 is well capable of it AND without bothering the user with the creation of a virtual drive where the VOB files are stored.

All that has to be done is rip the entire DVD contents in File mode (including the said VIDEO_TS.IFO file) into a folder. When done, set PowerDVD to open the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and it will start playing.

                Simple enough.
