dvdgenie and/or dvd RegionFree ?

i'm completely new to this, so please excuse my ignorance... in 'the complete region-free guide' on this site i have learned that 1. apart from the region code setting in my dvd player hardware and software, there is also a region code setting in windows which must be bypassed like the others ; and 2. that DVDRegionFree will allow me to play any dvd without having to flash the firmware on my dvd player.

I would like to use DVDRegionFree to avoid flashing the dvd player (leetle bit afraid...), but i would like to know whether this will also take care of the region code settings for windows, or should i use dvdgenie in addition ???

I have a nec dvd-r + powerdvd running under windows 2000.

I have a WinDVD and started with DVD Genie. But thay started the DVD region "count down". I paid for the DVD Region Free and as long as it is running before I put in a DVD Region disc, the counter for times it can change bac and forth stays the same..........thus keeping the Regions playabel

thanks very much for your help, i have installed regionfree dvd and now everything works fine, no flashing necessary, and my region code counter does not move at all ! (and i only lost one change during my trial and error process, so no worries...). by the way, i don't know if you know, you can configure regionfree dvd to launch automatically whenever you start your dvd player, that way you don't have to worry about it... a nice feature !

You shouldn't have been concerned. Also included in the DVDGenie is a "reset"...

dvdRegionFree, yeah baby.

just for info, i have been using dvdRegionFree for a while now and it works great so far. for anyone trying to decide what program to use i highly recommend it, very easy to install and configure and zero maintenance.

all you have to do is be careful when you first install it to configure it correctly (ie, tell it to run automatically everytime you start your player, so you don't have to think about it, and tell it to block region code changes at all levels). then, verify that it's working after you reboot (after installation : vital step, do not skip!) : i did this using DVDdriveinfo (also incredibly simple to use), and 2 dvds from different zones. before putting any dvd at all in the driver, run dvd drive info, and note all the settings it gives you : current region setting, how many changes (user / manufacturer) you have left, and the status (permanent / not permanent). then put in the first dvd and run power dvd (or whatever player you use...). if you get a prompt asking you to change region codes STOP !! DO NOT CLICK OK !! (heed my words : i did, like an imbecile, and i lost a region change. luckily i still have 3 left though and now everything works fine...) that means dvd region free is not working right (did you reboot ??? heed my words, part two). verify settings (specially auto-run), reboot, start over. if the dvd just starts playing, that's good. verify your region status again with dvd drive info and make sure nothing has changed. then, same thing with a different zone dvd. it's really easy to setup and once you have it installed you don't have to think about it at all, just play your dvds. and the best part, no flashing ! (i know, i'm a coward...)
