    Poor audio on playback

    Hi,

I hope there is someone who can help here.

I have just replaced a damaged DVD rom drive in my PC. But on playing a dvd disc the audio is rubbish.

when the film is playing the visual part is fine. The lip sync is ok. DMA is enabled. But the audio is hollow and if there is a quite part of the film there is a loud crackle running in the back ground. It sounds very similar to the noise an old record makes when it get to the end. If i load an audio CD into the DVD rom drive and play it the audio playback quality is fine. Therefore i dont think there is a problem with the connections, soundcard etc.

    All help is Greatfully received

I'd check them anyway. AC3 or DTS audio output from a DVD may generate different quality/strength output than does CD audio...

        Hi,

the dvd software is MSIDVD which came with the MSI ti4200 vidoe card i have. The sound card is a creative gold card, its several years old now but it was a top of the range card when i bought it.

I will recheck the connections to the sound card.

If the shield wire of the audio cable is poorly connected would this make a hissing noise?

        Regards

        Brendan

try another dvd playback software and see if the same thing happens. if the audio cable is faulty then i assume there would be sound problems with cds as well but you said there weren't any. if you can configure the sound output in msidvd, use directsound instead of waveout.
