DVD brightness

I'm getting the run around. When I play back a DVD the screen is very dark. My monitor maker says it's DVD player software. I deleted the software I was using and tried another one with no improvement. Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks.

Adjust the brightness and/or contrast settings of either your monitor or your videocard (videocard - for "Video" display only)

Did that. The problem persists. There is a huge difference between viewing and not viewing a DVD. Viewing the DVD is just too dark to see. Thanks for trying.
