I was searching the boards and found many people suffering from mpeg4/divx playing back upside down in many applications. I didn't find any good explanations of what was happening and how to fix it.
just fixed mine - your problem may be different, but a bad codec is likely the cause. So, if WMP is playing the file upside down, go to the file menu > properties. For 'video codec', it was showing 'moonlight nicePheratu' for me, even though i had other DIVX-compatible codecs installed. It turns out that this decoder was installed with elecard mpeg2. So, I uninstalled elecard, it's now using 3ivx by default, all is well (except i've got to find a good DVD player/codec now that i'm suspect of Elecard)
