Vhs - Wintv Pci - Dvd Burner?

    Hi all,

    Here's my setup:

    Athlon XP 2100, 1GB DDR, 60GHD, WINTV PCI, GF4 64MB, MSI 8X DVD BURNER.

I have a VHS VCR connected to the comp input of my wintv card.

Is there a one program solution to capture the video from the vcr. through the TV card, and encode for burning to DVD?

I want to back up all my old ST voyager tapes etc (yes, i KNOW i'm sad) to DVD.

The capture progs for my TV card are pretty crap, is there anything better or recomended to use when capturing video from one of these?

    Thanks all

    Andy.

    ANDY1234,

    Hi,

The wintv pvr card has only one good thing, it is macrosplat tolerant. If you haven't already done so, go to Hauppauge site and download and install any updates which apply to your card.

The price of standalone dvd recorders is falling, so don't fret.

Windows has a program called windows movie maker 2, which may solve your problem (it is buggy, but free). Also, you may have to have a sound capture card. Turtle beach is as good as Audigy 2 for such capturing.

There is an audio synch problem with the video, so there will definitely be a learning curve. Hauppauge refused to release correct software for the pvr's, their technicians admitted their software was crap.

If you have to buy a sound card to back-up, the advice is save that money and buy a standalone dvd recorder.

If you persist at such, visit the dvdrhelp.com site (they are a mature (old) site about such) as they have much to say with guides, card ratings hack links, etc..

You could wait until the price of the dvd recorders (standalone) plunge to less than $200.00 and do the smart thing (you know you will eventually buy one if you are heavy into S.T.). If the world continues for long, most of the posters will buy a dvd (standalone) recorder which means the end of Hauppauge's sickness. Look @ my signature, I wasted money, also.

Why settle for a 200 lines back-up, when you can have a 500 + lines back-up (unless you backed-up with the Super VHS Et 400 lines v.c.r.)?

Nothing sad about Voyager (One of the two best of the different 'Trek's ( I'm not saying whether its #1 or #2) and that's saying quite a lot).

I'm not a "trekkie, but I've enjoyed each series and movie except DS9. And so, this long post.

If you have any dvd back-up problems, lots of help @ this forum, but don't fall for any of the commercial software suggestions for dvd back-ups.

Do not buy any software for dvd back-ups, use the freewares. After you see that they work well. Visit their author's sites to learn more about the process od freeware development by their authors.

On your system all you would need would be the freewares :

    DVDDecrypter v. 3.1.9.0
    DvdShrink versions : 2.3, 3. 0 Beta 5, and 3.1.4 ?
    IMG Tools Classic v. 0.91.1 from Coujo.de
SmartRipper v 2.41 (not usually needed)
    vstrip (seldom needed)
    DVDShrink.info site for tutorial.
    Rig :

    P - 4 @ 1.7 Ghz, 768 mb (133) Ram, Intel 845 chipset M'board, Seagate 60 Gig., 5400 rpsm hdd, Maxtor 40 Gig. 7200 rpm hdd, Hauppauge 880 pvr card, etc.. O.S. - XP Home Edition.
