Toshiba SD-4700 r1/r3/r2-Japan can only be modificated by ,means of a special cable called TDSC ,controlled by special firmware software connected to the player's main board.

If someone gives you this code: "Zoom - 6 0 6 Zoom"
Thats no hack it will display your current firmware, chip version etc.

You might well give it a try but usually it displays info on your player.

okay, thanx. i'll give it a try but it sounds like i will have to cough up for a region-free player. any recommendations on an affordable progressive scan machine or perhaps a progressive scan region 1 player that is much easier to make region free?

incidentally, do you know how to modify an apple G4 powerbook so that you can keep selecting which region you want the dvd player to play? the way apple has it set up, you get to switch between regions the first 5 times you use it. after that, you have to choose between region 1 and region 2.

but apparently the dvd player can be reset after every five uses to allow the region choice to be reset.

There are thousands of players out there but why would you want a progressive scan dvd player.

hmm...i thought that progressive scan machines were meant to be better than those which aren't progressive scan. mind you, i have no idea what the difference is.

i presume by your question that you don't think progressive scan is necessary, in which case: which region-free dvd player do you recommend, progressive scan or not?

with regard to my mac drive, i copied this off "About This Mac":

it's a G4 Powerbook running OS 10.2.3 but it also has Mac Classic (OS 9.2.2)

it has a 60 GB hard drive and, i just discovered, 768 MB of RAM (i thought it had 640, so that was a nice surprise!)

Regarding Your mac i have a good site which may help you i haven't worked alot on mac systems therfore i don't want to give you any wrong information.go here.http://www.nomadness.net/modules.php...ws&new_topic=5

The difference between having a progressive scan player and having an interlaced player is that with progressive scan you will have sort of more improvement in the image frame.

Obviously there are quite alot of dvd players out there and all have there own features i would suggest you an

              Onkyo DVSP301
              features: Playback: CD-R, DVD-R, JPEG, CD-RW, MP3, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, WMA, DVD+R, VCD - Single Disc - 1 Discs - Progressive Scan - Dolby Digital
              Price:$84.99

*My suggestion a well built player supporting numerous features
but will only play REGION 2/4 Dvd's NO HACK AVALIBE.

thanx, i'll check out that site.

also, thank you for your suggestion re the onkyo, but i really want a region-free dvd player as i already have the toshiba 4700 which can't be hacked.

i suppose that since the onkyo plays regions 2 & 4, that would take care of the UK dvds, which is what i need to play. are those easily available in the US?

US is region 1, i believe.

i WOULD like a region-free player but i'm not sure which one to buy.

there is a site called www.nerd-out.com which lists hacks for lots of korean and chinese cheapo dvd players but i'm not sure how good they are (the players, not the hacks.)

Hey, Decryptit, how about a Samsung P-231 (progressive scan). The player was originally bought in the U.S., region 1, but: Can I play region 2 and region 4 discs on it ???????? ???
                        Is there an existing HACK?

                          No
If its region 2 it may play region 4
Regarding hacks FOR NOW i'm not giving any advise to any one since i'm not sure if they are legal or not in the forum.

If region hacking is illegal, then I wouldn't have named this forum "region-free" now would I?

Pretty much all the region-4 DVD discs that I buy now are encoded for region-2 as well, since it's cheaper for the manufacturer to do this then to produce seperate versions for each region. This is the reason why Australian DVD movies often comes with all the European audio streams and subtitles.

As for Korean DVD players, they're top notch and feature some of the latest technology not found in other players (like MP3/WMA playback, Kodak PhotoCD/JPEG CD support, DVI output ...). LG and Samsung, at least in Australian, can be compared to most of the other major brands like Sony or Panasonic (and in many cases, they're better because they offer newer technology). Some of the Chinese players are okay as well, but you need to know which brands to buy (eg. Apex).

I don't know if there is a region free method for the Samsung P231, but here's a page that contains codes for other Samsung players:
