Can't read DVD

I have a Compaq Presario 1800 laptop which has a Toshiba DVD SD-R2002. This one is combo DVD/CD-R-RW.
Recently I installed WINDOWS XP (clean installation) and since then it can't read any DVD, while it can read and write simple CD's. From software I use PowerDVD but I tried also with WinDVD.

It does not appear to be region locked because in the properties is written that it can change region 4 more times. It just can not "see" anything when a DVD is inserted!

I istalled SP1a and Adapted UDF reader. The situation remains the same.


Does anybody have any idea?

Are you saying WinDVD can't recognise your DVD unit?
Check your Windows Components in Control Panel/Add-Remove Software for video and audio codecs, also your Device Manager for driver probs.
Do you not have the original OS and Driver disks? You might find drivers downloadable from Toshiba.

I have the original OS and software. Toshiba does not have drivers for this combo DVD/CDR-W for windows XP because the drivers form the windows are OK.
the problem is not in the Device Manager.

The problem is that that the DVD player does not recognize the DVD disc. When a DVD disc is inserted after few seconds I get the message: " No disc in drive D: "

You may try to add the harware from winxp's enchanced ADD HARDWARE in the contol panle perhpas then it will regognise the dvd combo.Do you have any other drivers besides that ?

Are you trying to play/access a "Commercial DVD", or an already "Backed-up" or "Data" DVD?

His os is not recognising his dvd at all but just cd support.

The DVD player is recognised from windows in the device manager correctly.

I tried to insert 3 DVD movies (region2), 1 DVD for a computer mag, and 1 DVD data, the result was the same:
"windows cannot read the disc "

Have you searched for any drivers ?

I searched in Toshiba 's site but gives drivers only for Dos and WIN 3.1
It was written that for windows XP you don' t need drivers

hmm, CDs read and write ok?
Have you tried a lens cleaner just to be certain?
Is the Toshiba unit on a plug-in caddy?
Just yesterday I came across one that seemingly wasn't fully connecting.

The only think that has changed in the laptop is the installation of WINXP (clean installation) It was working before.

clutching at straws here but you could try the control panels' 'add/remove hardware' wizard to try and detect it and install any missing software.

I removed it, and the windows find it immediatelly and installed the drivers in 1 second

But the problem remains the same

I've thought of something else but it's a grey area for me and I'm really not sure even from a search through the threads that it's your problem.
You could try 'Force ASPI' to engage an interim software layer for interfacing.
At least with XP you should be able to do a complete removal if no difference.
