    DTS Playback

    Hi,

Okay I admit it, im a newbie!! I've only had my DVD drive for a couple of days and already i need some help.

For some reason I cannot hear anything when i playback DTS titles i have tried this in WinDVD 3.0 and Direct DVD 3.6 but cant hear anything. Playback is fine on DOlby Digital Titles its just a problem when i select DTS.

I have also ripped a DTS trailer from a disc using DVD Decrypter but again when i relay the .vob file its mute.

How do i play back DTS audio? Do i need different hardware or something? Also is it possible to "convert" the DTS soundtrack into AC-3 or .wav or mp3?

    Many Thanks

"Do i need different hardware or something?"

    Yes.

But, as far as I know, all commercial DVDs that have DTS audio tracks ALSO contain Dolby Digital 5.1 and/or 2.0 .AC3 tracks - all of which are available from the DVD's audio setup menu.

Thanks. I realise that there is also in AC-3 soundtrack but i want the DTS soundtrack. Im compiling all the DTS, SDDS, THX & Dolby Trailers that i can find. The THX & Dolby Trailers are not a problem but i cant figure out a way to be able to hear the DTS audio, what do i need to be able to do this then? I thought that if my DVD player software could decode DTS than i should be able to hear it through my soundcard and speakers. Admittidely i dont have a 5.1 speaker set up actually nearer a 4.1 and i have the Soundblaster Live soundcard and not the Soundblaster Live 5.1 but i should still here sound shouldnt I?

        DTS Playback

I think that you can try the following:
In WinDVD, choose 4 channels or 4.1, I don't remember if it is available. Don't choose spdif, because if you choose that the only thing WinDVD does is stream the dts signal trough the audio output, and the decoding would have to be done by the amplifier, or the speakers that you are using. And ensure that the WinDVD version you have have DTS decoding (in the Help/About Menu).

I don't think the Soundblaster Live card supports DTS playback. If you go to www.soundblaster.com and check the specs on your card there will be no reference to DTS. However, the newer Audigy card does. This may be your problem.

            Software decoders

            Hi

I don't really have any coment on the point in discussion. But, I myself have a problem which is rather puzzling or just my insufficient knowledge.

I have a 5.1 channel speaker system and the latest WinDVD software which i understand is capable of decoding DTS and Dolby Digital. However, my current soundcard is an onboard 2-channel. I have already tried playing DTS and dolby digital media on the computer using windvd through the 2-channel card choosing 6 speaker configuration and connecting just the front channels to the speaker out. But I could hear the complete downmixed soundtrack rather than just the front channel audio, which could have have cleared my confusion.

Now there are 6 channel soundcards available without hardware decoding capabilities like the zalman RSSC and soundcards with decoding capabilities like Audigy 2 NX. To enjoy Digital multichannel sound even with the software, do i definitely need the later or the former will do with the help of the software?

From my trial it seems that the software decoder can only work when a dolby digital and DTS decoding enabled soundcard is present.

            Any ideas?
