Upsample HDMI DVD player worth it or gimmick?

Can upsample DVD player with HDMI output really give noticeably better PQ than a regular DVD player with component output for playback on plasma HDTV? Thanks!

    yes, it can

the switch from component to HDMI alone will make a difference, though whether you may or may not notice it

From what I hear from Sound and Vision it isn't so much worth it. The upscaling players are getting cheaper and cheaper but they are only reworking a signal designed to play at a 480p resolution - from what I'm told. You can also "upscale" through newer more expensive audio receivers.

I personally can not tell a difference between a 480p and an upscaled HDMI input through a receiver from the same DVD.

HD/Blueray DVD's are a totally different story but I've only been able to see them at the Bang & Olufson (sp?) store.

I would like to say - kind of away from the question - upgrading my HD cable box from component to HDMI was a big difference in all the analog, digital and HD channels.

What's the difference between HDMI and DVI output on DVD players and which output should give better picture? My plasma HDTV has HDMI input. Should I try DVI (using DVI -> HDMI cable) or HDMI? Thanks!

DVI and HDMI provide the same picture quality-- the main difference is HDMI carries audio and video in one cable, while DVI is just video. for other smaller differences, search the forums or google.

              HDMI is better
