disable subtitles

this is a strange one for me, i have lots of dvds from asia and all run fine. but i just got serial experiments lain box set and have a strage problem

the english audio track works fine but when playing i cant disable the chinese subtitle nomater what i try. ive loaded the vob file using a couple of programs including windvd and the subtitles arnt displayed. but i cant get the english audio.

i guess the vob file defaults to no subs jap audio

and the english audio defaults to chinese subs

anyone have any ideas such as a software player that let u exclusivly chose the combination of audio/subs..

any help appriciated
