Problem with Philips 3166 DVD USB player

I have a Philips 3166 DVD player which is just 4 months old
1.The USB drive is not detecting the pendrives.
2. Can i have an external hard-disk connected to this USB drive and play movies and songs.If yes, then what should be the make and capacity of hard-disk.
3.What should be the file system format (FAT32, NTFS)
