VCD on DVD-r media ?

I have 8 VCD compliant files totaling about 3 GIG. I would like to put it onto a DVD but as I understand it this is not allowed. I think that maybe the standards for VCD (being that it is designed for CD) mean that no one produces a DVD player that will check for VCD formted DVD disks. My only idea so far is to make it the files low quality DVD compliant files.



So 2 questions

1 Can it be done (without converting to DVD format).
2 If not why?

I'm not certain, but I think I heard somewhere that you can put vcd compliant mpeg-1 files onto a dvd as a dvd format disc.
Don't take my word for it tho...
