    DivX vs VCD vs SVCD

What is the reason for encoding in DivX....vs VCD....vs SVCD? I know that VCD and SVCD are able to be played on DVD's (most of the time)....but what are the advantages of formatting in DivX???

ok.....so DivX has much better compression.....and therefore better quality in a smaller file size......but they aren't compatible with any DVD players......or anything of that nature?

DivX is basically made to be viewed via your computer....or thru a TV output slot on a video card run thru your TV?

Yes exactly. But divx capable standalone players will eventually be here.
