ARGH! Divx

I am trying to compress The Cell and everything has been working fine, as well as the past 100 Divx I made. I am putting it on 2 CD's at 1700 kbps (same as the others). It is 720x380 and looks perfect. No sound issues, no errors at all. (BTW I am happy with the large size and I KNOW I can reduce it, but I don't want to.) The only problem is in far away background scenes, it's very pixilated, up close it's sharp as can be. I have spend 12+hours messing with setings (Divx 5.0.2) and the only way I can get it to look good in the background is Quality-based and the AVI comes out 9x's bigger than usual. This VERY irritating, because I read everywhere, "Mess with the settings" and it's getting me nowhere. Is there a basic setting for Divx for great quality or an area of setings which would reduce that pixilation in backgrounds? Much help would be appreciated.

since your posting lacks basic info on HOW exactly you create your avi, how should one give you any good advice???

resize to 720x380 precise bicubic -1.0 A
smart deinterlacer 2.7 - frame only differencing
compare color channels instead of luma
use cubic for interpolation
motion threshold 15
scene change threshold 100

I just want to know what is the setting for making the background look better, everything else is clear and sharp (and I would like to keep it at 720x380)

well withOUT a 2pass routine you shouldnt be wondering about pixelation!

use 2 passes and you'll be amazed how much better it'll look compared to what you consider decent now!

and dont use mp3 @ 64kbps

use OGG!

The audio I'm using is wav... should I use mp3?

if you handle it correctly, it will perfectly fit!
