How to downsize a divx file?

    Hello.

I'm totally new to this forum so please bare with me. Here is the thing. To many of you its propabbly a loaded question but I need to know how to downscale a Divx movie so that I can burn it on a 700mb CD. The movie size is 774mb and I realize that I will have to sacrafise the quality somewhat but how do I do it. I have Virtual Dub installed with 5.0.2 Div-X. I played around with it a bit but I can't figure out how to go about it? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

You can try to recompress the audio with a lower setting
In VDub set audio to full processing mode and select compression
Make sure that the sampling rate is the same ex.44100Hz
Video is set to Direct Stream Copy

    or

Recompress the video with a lower bitrate
Set video to full processing mode and select compression
Select your codec ex DivX MPEG 4 Low-Motion.
You may want to use a bitrate calculator to find the proper bitrate.
    Save the new avi [F7]

Sometimes recompresing isn't the best solution, because of decrease of quality.
The other way (without quality loss) is cutting off tiltles at the beginning and the end of movie.
In VirtualDub set audio and Video to Direct Stream Copy.
Select part of movie which You want to delete at the begining of movie and delete it. The same at the end of movie.
Save the new avi. If the avi is bigger then 702Mb, then the only way is recompress without cutting

P.S. If You look the filesize in MB, then it's o.k. In kB not at all, because 700MB ~ 717 000 kB...

        The easy way out!

        Why don't you by a 99min/800Mb-CD?

Alternatively, you may consider cutting the file to fit on 2 cd's. That way you will get the entire movie, without a loss of quality associated with re-encoding.

The cutting procedure is explained in detail in the divx-digest.com articles.
