Is this happening with only one specific video or several?

If only one video is generating this error, does the video play properly, all the way through, under Windows Media Player?

yes all video types, wmv, avi, mpeg`s,
mainly just tryin to convert wmv to either avi or mpeg.
tmpgenc can not open or unsupported. even tho play thru wmplayer.

"mainly just tryin to convert wmv to either avi or mpeg."

Now that you've added this critical bit of information, be advised that neither VirtualDub nor TMPGEnc can properly process WMV v.8 files...

Several postings at these boards have referred to a methodology of using GraphEdit for such conversions. Do a search for "WMV8 to AVI".
