    DivX codec for dvd players

Ok this is probably stupid question time but....... I've just bought a dvd player so i can watch the movies i rip on my telly instead of being shut away infront of pute all night. I'm converting my divx movies to vcd which means 2 cds instead of one bah!
My new dvd player will play any format of dvd mpeg mp3 vcd svcd so why hasnt some bright spark found a way to put the divx codec into these machines. There is probably a good reason for this and you all now think I'm dumb - but if you dont ask you dont learn!!!
    Cheers

Well if you have'nt noticed the divx codec is still under heavy development I doubt movies encoded with divx 4.5 in half a years time will be able to play perfectly on the current version (4.12).
Makeing a hardware decoder chip is rather expensive stuff, so if u do this u better be 100% sure the codec will not change in the next 2-5 years.
I my opinion it will probably take 2-3 years before we can expect a hardware divx decoder.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

      DivX on a DVD player

I understand it will take a lot of time for the development of the DivX standard and a hardware solution for DVD players will therefore be a long time in the making (ie. in order to play DivX movies directly from your DVD player).

But, is there a software solution? ie. Is there a DVD player on the market that can be programmed so as to accept the DivX drivers/codecs? For instance I know that a Toshiba DVD player can be programmed so it can play MP3's

      Regards
      Carlo

I dont really understand how these things work but all I know is if I want to play a certain format of film in lets say Windows Media Player and it doesnt recognise the format it races off somewhere grabs the codec and hey presto my film plays. If I need to upgrade my modem I just flash it - same with mobo bios. Don't see why this is not possible with a dvd player then as the codec for divx develops flash with new version. It all seems quite simple to me but I'm sure there is a very good reason why it can't be done.
